Jackman Trail report Jan 30, 2020

What a crazy winter we are all having.   Where is all the snow?  Luckily, I think Jackman is the only place to find any decent riding.  No it is not perfect and thee are some areas south and east of us getting a bit rough but there is still plenty of trails to enjoy.We have a pretty solid base so any snow the higher elevations did get, has helped. The groomers went out Monday and will go out again tonight to do areas needed.

Reports from our guests say that once you are out of town, the trails are holding up.  The ride to Pittston is good as well as to the border.  We had a few who went to the first clubhouse in Quebec and said that area was awesome.

Another option is off trail or on un plowed roads.  Since there has not been a lot of snow, you will not get stuck as easy and yet plenty to ride on.

From other clubs:  Pittston has been grooming and went up toward Kokajo also.  They say the trails are in great shape.  Many have said Rockwood and Greenville riding is pretty rough but the club said they groomed on the 28th.  Parlin area is holding up.  They said to watch for some rocks around Coburn Mtn and some bare spots in the woods. They say most bad spots are passable but rough.

SO simply, yes you can find some good riding but be aware of some rough areas, icy curves and all the clubs are recommending scratchers.  There will be a lot of people out there this weekend so ride to the right and stay safe!

 

Ice Fishing Tips

Free Ice fishing weekend is coming up.  February 15-16, 2020,  any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days.

Here on Big Wood, fisherman try for the Splake, Trout, Salmon, Yellow Perch and cusk.  January seems better for trout but truly it is up to the luck and skill of the fisherman.

SO here are some ice fishing tips I pulled from the Maine Sportsman author, Tom Seymour

If you want to catch Salmon, the best bait is smelt.                                                   Set up your traps with only enough added weight to keep your bait from swimming to the top. GO with a hook and a small sinker, nothing else.                    “Set most of your traps so that t6he smelt is only a few feet beneath the ice. This is to intercept the salmon that are cruising just under the ice in search of smelt. Reserve a line or 2 for deeper water just in case” Check bits regularly, sit back and hope for the best.

Now what about the Togue. They can keep an angler running after flags all day Drop your lines deep using smelt.  Tom describes using a jigging rod but that is beyond my understanding.

Taking care of your catch is simple: fill and chest with snow, add the fish and cover with more snow. They will stay fresh to cook back at camp.

Others suggest that Brook trout are often found near the shoreline and best using smelts or worms.  One angler suggested, drilling one hole and test it for 30 minutes. If no luck move on to another.

We do not know of anyone who rents ice fishing equipment but you can buy traps here in town as well as bait. You can also rent shacks or just bring your chair and have a great day.

Rate adjustment

As the cost of living goes up everywhere, believe it or not, it does so in Jackman also.  We have had very reasonable rates for many years (lower than even Rockwood & Greenville)  so it is time we make this adjustment.

In trying to make the adjustment in increments, we did a small increase this winter for all the cabins and the large cabin rates listed on the rates page of our website will go into affect in July 2020.

Keep in mind, we still offer Deer season specials as well as a weekly rate discount.   We plan to offer specials during the year also so keep an eye on the blog posts.

Of course, any reservation quote made prior to this notice will be honored.

Jackman Trail report January 9

In town Jackman did not get the 6-10 inches of snow that was in the forecast last weekend but we did get about 2 in town.  The good news is that in the higher elevations, where the trails are, about 6-8  .inches fell.  Then this past week we have been snowing off and all, giving us here, about an inch or so a day.

As you can see from these photo taken (I think around Long Pond) by Riverview yesterday, the trails are in great shape. All the trails have been groomed. They found some rough areas but all in all, not bad considering.  North of town seemed to be the best ride at this time.

The weather forecast is calling for rain throughout the state on Saturday, but will that happen here in Jackman?   One never knows. It seems like the weatherman change the forecast every day.   Keep doing the snow dance.

Ice fishing in Jackman

Even if there is not a lot of snow to ride, the one thing fun to do in Jackman is Ice fishing.  The ice on Big Wood is about a foot thick.  The ice shacks have been out there since mid December.  I even saw trucks out last weekend.

This little family enjoyed their day out on the ice and caught a few keepers too. I wonder if it was their first time “getting the big one”
