Spring brings new life

About this time every year, we get to watch our Tree Swallows fight and flurry to get the best house and begin their nesting.

And it has begun!  We have about 11 houses and it seems they all know to come back to play here at Cozy Cove Cabins.

How much fun it is to watch them making nests, fighting over the house, and then playing, I assume.

This one, I think they are having a discussion about who has to watch the nest and who gets to play.

And although they have not arrived yet, soon my finches will arrive too.   Can’t wait.

This is the season to find birds in our region.  I hear many calls and hoots just around here but I cannot see them.  And the only sound I recognize is the chickadees.

We do have a few ducks already but I have not heard the loons yet.  Of course, the lake is still ice but it won’t be long now.

Deck removal started

When we first started replacing the decks on the cabins, way back when, I did not like using pressure treated. One reason, you have to let it sit for 6 months before you can stain it.

Well we have learned that basic deck boards simply do not last.  In the past couple years we have had to replace a board here and there and sometimes, the board looked OK on the top but we found it was rotten underneath.  We have already replaced (2nd time) decks on Cabin 5 and 7. Last fall, we decided to replace the decks on Cabins 1 and 2 and bought all the decking need giving it time to dry out before spring.

SO once we had these cabins empty, even though there was still snow on the ground, Steve chose to begin removing decking and whatever bad joists as needed.

Now we just have to wait for some warm weather to put the first coat of stain on the new pressure treated decking.   HMMM.  Wonder when that may be.

2017 Snowmobile season ends

This years snowmobile season has come to an end.  Surprisingly, we had riders here last weekend (April 7th) and even though they chose to trailer up to the clubhouse, they said the ride to Pittston was really good.

The trails in our region remain open until April 15th but our club is no longer grooming. The temperatures have warmed up considerably this week.  The snow is melting and we can even see the ice on Big Wood rising with all the run off.

A big thank you goes out to those of you who stayed with us this winter not only to snowmobile and ice fish but also those who just needed to get away,  See you next season….unless you want to visit us this summer!

Spring work has begun

The snow is melting and we are seeing some warmer days.  SO the exterior work has begun. We have 2 decks this year in need of replacement. Both were replaced our first years here but time and the elements have done their job.  Unfortunately, not only the deck boards but the joists need replaced.  Even though maybe only a few are going, may as well do it all.

But Steve got a good jump on it.  He has removed all the old wood and replaced all the new supports needed.  Now all we need is a few good days to begin staining the deck boards and this project will be done.

Happy Spring!

Deer caught on cam

Our cabins are not be in the woods which is why it always amazes me to see so much wildlife here out our front door.  It may not be often but we have seen moose, fox, mynx, turtles and now, our webcam caught 6 cute deer walking across our shoreline.
