Big Wood Lake Ice out

We should start a little poll here to see if anyone can determine ICE OUT on Big Wood Lake this year.

If you have been reading the entries, there is much talk about the amount of snow we have had and STILL have.BUT I have not talked about the frozen lake. And we are heading toward spring, I think!

The Lake has been frozen and safe since late December. I have not seen many trucks out this year but that may be because of the amount of snow on shore and on the lake. But I know it is thick.Last weekend, Steve went out in front of our place to drill a hole for a guest and his auger went all the way in before it hit water…so is that about 3 feet?

Taking in consideration the snow and the ice thickness this year, I wonder when the ice will go out? Leave me a comment as to your prediction. Whomever gets it ON THE MARK, wins. I am not sure what you win except for the acknowledgment:lol:

I will help you out a little too by giving you the last 4 year dates.

Year-Ice out Date-Inches of snow
2003 -May 3 -104.00
2004 -April 30 66.00
2005 -May 3 – 123.00
2006 -April 20 – 53.00
2007 -May 9 -65.00 – WOW – that is only up to December 31, 2007

Do you see a pattern here ❓

Spring is here

One of our guests today said “I think Jackman forgot to get the memo that Spring has arrived” 😆 I believe this is a fact. Driving around town today, I cannot believe the amount of snow we still have.

I took this shot of our front entrance to the office/lobby. Yes, there is a door and an OPEN sign on the door behind all of that snow.

We had a sign up all winter, encouraging guests to use the back entrance because snow always falls off the roof. (the sign is still there on a sled but buried) Until recently, we have done pretty good in keeping the porch and entrance in the front cleaned up. After the last couple storms and the winds, we had to give up. Now, I am not sure if we will ever find our front door 😆

It was 14 below early this morning but now our thermometer is reading 20 but I believe the chill factor is making it feel less as it is getting quite breezy out. A friend of mine in California is going through a hot spell of 90 degrees and when she looked at our webcam today, she said she felt instant cool 😉

Soon we will be looking at the beautiful lake like the guy on the snapshot above!

Jackman still has SNOW

While most of the northeast is dealing with rain, Jackman, of course still has TONS of snow. The Bangor weather station said we were to get 10 inches yesterday. We did not but our friend in Dennistown did. You know what that means:?: The trails will be incredible this week ❗

Last night the wind started up and today, WOW 😮 …they are really blowing which I am hoping you can see that in this picture. Steve has already plowed most of the drifts that happened over night but the white you see is not a bad picture or lens. It is blowing snow ❗

If you are not on your way up this weekend already, do not put away your snowmobile and gear. Plenty more riding possible in the region. Maybe we will see spring in May 😆

As I was out doing rounds on the cabins just now, I caught a different angle of the blowing snow. Hope you can FEEL the chill ❗

March Snowmobiling

As you can see from the photo above which was taken only 2 days ago, there is still plenty of snow in the region to ride. The temperatures are moderate yet cold enough to keep the trails in great shape.

Riders we have here this week say that from town north and east are excellent riding conditions. “There is easy an 8 inch crust below everything that makes even off trail riding incredible ❗ “

And for you Ice Fisherman, the fish are still biting out there on Big Wood.

Cabin #5 gets a redo!

Although many of our guests LOVED Cabin #5, “”””No Name”””” and told us not to change a thing, we know that it does need to be updated. SO last week, the demolition began. As the walls came down, we found that it was added to about 3 times; a true new englander camp! This does give it character but also makes it very long and narrow.

Although we have some of our own ideas on it, we thought we would ask you, our guests, as to what you would like to see in this cabin, or if anyone out there is creative or an architect and has a thought, bring it on! We would appreciate the input.

The basic outline of the structure is below. We are at a point that we can do anything to it except move the toilet, which is the bullseye on the drawing. It-s location is about 7 feet from the front (lakeside) of the cabin and about 3 feet from the wall. We want to make this a 4 maximum cabin, perhaps using a futon or daybed set up instead of twin bunk beds. If you have any thoughts on it and want more information on dimensions or size of needed items, send us an email.

I did find a site through Better Homes and Gardens that makes it fun to design. Go to this link and give it a try. If you come up with an idea, send us an email.

March 2008 QUOTES from our Guests

March 1, 2008
Our last trip for awhile to Jackman was wonderful ❗ Weve always enjoyed coming to relax and enjoy the cabins. It was extremely cold ❗ My husband and friend walked across the frozen pond to the island. Said it was a good trek but no wildlife 🙁 We didnt see any moose this time. Oh Well. Tami and Steve always provide a great place to enjoy friends and good times. I have never had more fun that drunk sledding with our friends at 11 PM ❗ Only in Jackman ❗ ❗ We-ll miss you ❗

We only brought 1 snowmobile because we just couldnt get the second one started. That was ok because we came to fish more than ride. The only ice fishing I have ever done is smelting. This was definitely a lot of fun. I set up of my traps & sat back to relax with a drink to keep me warm 🙂 We saw a couple different eagles-one of them flew right over us. I have never seen one that close. It was beautiful. we kinda struck out with the fish. Maybe we are kinda late ❓ When we pulled the lines up we saw that a few of the smelt we were using for bait were a little beat up. Some of them were missing their heads ❗ 🙁 I think these trout or salmon are smarter than we are ❗ 😆 The 4 of us came back to the Kona for some yummy pizza from BISHOPS STORE. We played a game of scrabble, went to bed early. We got up early the next dayWe had much better luck today catching a fish. I was screaming and yelling – running from trap to trap as the flags popped up. I was so excited that I actually shouted flag on, fish up instead of flag up, fish on ❗ The guys were making fun of me but I think they were a little jealous when I caught the 2 biggest fish ❗ I caught an 18 and a 14 salmon. We caught 10 fish in all ” all salmon. We cooked up a great dinner when we got back to the Kona What a cozy little cabins-we are really going to miss it ! Thank you Tami and Steve. Well be back in the summer.
