A sad time for many in Jackman

October 14, 2009 | 3 comments

Demolition began this month at St Anthony's church. Today as I drove buy, it was very sad to see this actually happening.

Not only because it is a beautiful stone building, built in 1928, and very much a part of the Jackman region history but because of the sadness I felt for those parishioners who have grown up here, raised their children here, baptized, first communions or married in that church. My heart goes out to those folks the most.

According to an article in the Bangor News, the cost to upgrade and repair the building plus the high cost of fuel, made it impossible to continue on. They plan to rebuild a more cost efficient building in its place.

Yes, sad. I go down Maine twice a year passing in front of the church. I always enjoyed it's architecture.
Next June, I will again pass by but it will be gone and it will make me sad.
Fortunately, I took a very good picture of it in 2008. not knowing at the time that this photo would soon become a piece of history.
