Look who is feasting on our trees. I was only a few feet away from him to get this photo and he had absolutely no fear. It was fun to watch him peck at the tree then spit out the wood to the side! He is lucky that this is a tree that is in need to come down.
Month: May 2019
Birds
May seems to bring out all the mating rituals of birds, especially my beloved tree swallow. Steve even saw a couple chasing each other then they landed right in front of him and did the dirty. He was shocked.
We have many houses all around the property just for them. They frolic, mate, and nest all month. Once they choose a house, they settle down except to fly around to protect that house.
These two were pretty funny to watch. They flew from this house, a very old one, over to Cabin 3, a new build, for about an hour. Then they settled on this house, chirping at each other. It was if to say, she wants to old house with character and he wants the new house that needs no work. I think she won.
Big Wood ice out contest 2019
The ice out date was May 9th this year. I do not have an exact time but probably afternoon after the wind kicked up a bit.
This is a photo I captured from our webcam on Wednesday evening around 8pm. It appears that 99% of the ice is out but all along this eastern shore, is a thick layer of ice. So I hesitated to call it. In our contest though, Celie was the closest to win. Nice job Celie!
But the problem of declaring ice out was that even at 10 am on the 9th, there was still ice at the boat landing. Part of how they decide on” ice out” is there cannot be ice from the boat landing to Sally Mountain. As you can see, it is still there.
.
By afternoon though, we did see a couple boats on the lake. Open water fishing can commence here in Jackman. I did hear though that Moosehead is out too.
March 13, 2019
I was reminded 3 times last week…”when are you going to post the ice out contest?”
Well, here you go.
Time for you all to guess when the ice will go out on Big Wood this year. As most of Maine, we had snow in November, and the lake froze over well before season open. As of today, the fisherman are needing an extension on the augers, so over 3 feet thick.
We have had a very cold, blowy, snowy winter so far. Today I think it is the warmest at 38.
The ice out date last year was May 5th at 4:30 am.
So how this will work:
Choose your date and time. Choosing a time is helpful if multiple people choose the same date. The person closest to the time will win.
Add a comment to this post with your guess. We can only accept one entry per person/email.
The winning date will be what the Town of Jackman records as the ice out date and time for 2019.
The winner will get 50% off one night when they stay with us 2 or more days or 1 full night free if they stay 4 or more days. This discount will expire December 31, 2019.
The deadline to post your vote this year is 8am on April 15th, 2019.
Please Note: Only one discount permitted per stay at Cozy Cove Cabins and our same discount rules apply. (payment by check or cash, cabin minimum must be met)
Watch our webcam at www.cozycovecabins.com for signs of change.
LET’S THE GUESSING BEGIN!

Happy Anniversary to us 2019
Happy Cinco De Mayo!
We celebrate the 5th of May for a few reasons. 1 My adult beverage of choice is Tequila. 2 Cinco de Mayo hold very fond memories for us both as years we spent vacationing in San Felipe were memorable. 3. And most importantly, It is the day in 2004 that we took ownership to Cozy Cove Cabins.
So as we begin our 16th year here year at Cozy Cove Cabins, we hope that wherever you are, you will raise a glass to us as we will also have a few toasts to you, our guests. Without you, we would not still be here. Thank you.
Happy May Day
What a beautiful day to celebrate the first of May. Does anybody follow the secret flower giving on a friends door?
This is a shot from our webcam this morning. The ice is getting darker so ice out is coming! YAY!
