For those of you not on Facebook and in case you also missed the moon rising in the east on the 19th or setting in the west on the 20th in person, I captured the Moon setting over Big Wood for you. It was a site for sure. If you would like to see more, let me know.
Month: March 2011
Ice fishing 2011
Although Big Wood is still frozen and quite thick, we saw MANY ice shacks coming off the lake today. It is a beautiful day and perhaps it is easier to take them off today while the ice is so frozen then waiting for it to turn to slush.
Some fisherman this weekend have said they are not getting the big ones but it is “still better then being at work” 🙂 A couple more weeks to go.
Big Wood Ice Out Contest 2011
That is this mornings webcam shot and it is a beautiful day today in Jackman…the sun is out and the temperature is about 20, a weather report very similar to last year at this time. With that being said, who will be able to guess the ice out date this year ❓ Last year it was on April 19th. Below are some weather tidbits to help you along the way.
As you can see in this photo, (sorry for the trees) taken today,
they are still ice fishing all over the lake and in some areas, they have said they need an auger extension. Our snowmobilers are still riding across the lake with no signs of melt or slush along the shoreline. (In town trails are getting bony)
Below is a snapshot of the east side of Big Wood where the Moose River outlet begins. I see one fisherman has moved his shack. Wonder what he knows.
The temperatures this past week have only hit 40 a couple times. Otherwise our daytime temps have been low 30s and at night mostly 20 or less.
So how this will work:
Add a comment to this post with your guess as to the date the ice will go out. We can only accept one date per person and do not guess the same date that is already posted. The exact date will be what the Town of Jackman records as the ice out date for 2011. Whomever chooses that date, will win 50% off one night when they stay with us 2 or more days in 2011. Please Note: Only one discount permitted per stay at Cozy Cove Cabins and our same discount rules apply.
You must submit your date before April 10th to be eligible.

March 2011 snow
As you can see, Steve is still cleaning up after the snowstorm on Monday that brought us about 16 inches of snow.
It is snowing again now, about 3 inches already, but the forecast is calling for rain tomorrow. Hopefully, the temperatures will stay low.

Northeast Championship 2011
The Northeast Sled Dog Championship Races begin today at the Border Riders Clubhouse. We have 2 of last years gold medalists from Wisconsin staying with us again this year. Good luck to all the mushers.
Note: this is an image from last year but I will be going up to the races this morning, trudging through the snow off of Holeb Road and getting a few new pictures. I will post them here later so please check back.
OK here you go! One team coming to the curve!
